This website, thredUp, seems to be advertising all over the place in my area. i see ads in the trains, have read about it online, in some blogs I read etc. And like everything, I read some great reviews and some awful.
For those not familiar:thredUP is a resale website for consumers to buy and sell secondhand clothing online.
I was curious since they were receiving lots of buzz.
The way I see it... there are two functions.... 1) you can buy things from them online, at what they say is a much lower price since the item is gently used, or often new (how often have we all bought something, and just never wear it, I'm guilty of that). Basically an online consignment shops. They have a gazillion brands listed in all different price points, from J Crew, Banana R, Vince, 7 for all Mankind, Old Navy, Lands' End, Lululemon, Gap, kids things like Gymboree. (I just took a quick look for a sample). If someone interested in that, I will say some of the prices look really good.
The other function is that you can clean thru your closet and sell them the clothes that you no longer want. But when I was looking around the site the amount they pay for some items is just pennies. Often a few dollars for a shirt. Of course prices depend on brand, style, condition, whether in big demand. They of course pay more for great condition, current higher rend item from say Vince, than a tee from Target.
Now for me, if I was going to just get a few dollars or less for items (and I don't know what items they will accept, and I might get less than expected for some items I would guess they would take), I would rather just donate them to one of my favorite local charities.
If you just want the stuff out of your house, and you would be happy with $5 or $50, or maybe even nothing, this could might be the way to go. or if you don't want/care to try to sell it at local consignment shops (or have none in your area). It is certainly easy, they ship you a big bag, you fill it with clothes, shoes, and they pay postage.
You can pay to get your stuff back (if they don't want it). I'm a bit sketchy on the details -- but I don't want to spend money to do that. I decided to try them out and sent a bag of stuff (nothing really good), and I guess it takes them awhile to process since it has been a couple of weeks.
They say "they have high quality standards and typically accept less than 40% of the clothing we receive. I read that the things they don't accept gets recycled and/or sold to third party (where i guess they sell those "not wanted" stuff). They say helps offset their costs.
I was curious, has anyone dealt with them before?
So I wonder what I will get from my bag of clothes? Just a few dollars, more, or maybe nada. It was great to get all those things out of my closet. I bet I'm going to stick with what I usually do, but was just trying them since I was curious. For me, if they don't accept some items (which I know will happen), I'd rather it go to someone in need in my city, rather than being recycled into couch filling or whatever, or resold. And, trying to sell some of the items locally if I want to give that a try before donating. Plus if important to you, you can get a tax deduction if you do it locally.
My neighbor buys clothes (often with tags) for her three year old, and has sold her kids clothes, so certainly there are fans.
Has anyone tried?
